BASEBALL
Stephen Scott laced a two-run double to right field in the eighth inning to give the Portland Sea Dogs a 3-2 win over the Erie SeaWolves in an Eastern League game Friday night at Hadlock Field, ending a five-game losing streak.
Scott’s hit came after the first two batters in the inning – Wilyer Abreu and Rafaela Ceddanne – each drew a walk.
Izzy Wilson started Portland’s comeback from a 2-0 deficit with an RBI single in the fifth.
Jacob Wallace picked up the win in relief, and Michael Gettys pitched the ninth for his first career save.
• Former big league player Derek Dietrich was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a stimulant.
Dietrich, 33, is on the roster of the New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He last appeared in the majors with Texas in 2020.
TENNIS
NADAL STILL AILING: Rafael Nadal withdrew from the upcoming hard-court tournament in Montreal because of the abdominal injury that caused him to pull out of Wimbledon ahead of the semifinals.
The Spaniard had been 19-0 in Grand Slam matches this year when he decided the injury was too much at Wimbledon. He won the Australian Open and the French Open to increase his major total to a men’s record 22 – one more than Novak Djokovic and two more than Roger Federer.
Nadal is a five-time champion in Montreal. American player Mackenzie McDonald will replace Nadal in the draw.
Djokovic withdrew from the Montreal tournament on Thursday because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and is therefore not allowed to enter Canada.
CITI OPEN: Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios needed 14 minutes to complete a rain-delayed win over Reilly Opelka, efficiently closing out a 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory.
Kyrgios, the 2019 champion in Washington, was scheduled to return to the court Friday night for a quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe, who beat Botic van de Zandschulp, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
SILICON VALLEY CLASSIC: Coco Gauff held off four-time major champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 late Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals in San Jose.
Other winners included No. 2 seed Paula Badosa, No. 4 seed Aryna Sabalenka and Shelby Rogers.
HOCKEY
NHL: The Calgary Flames and recently acquired forward Jonathan Huberdeau agreed to an $84 million, eight-year contract extension.
Huberdeau, 29, finished last season with 30 goals and 85 assists for the Florida Panthers. His point total had him tied for second in the NHL, and his 85 assists were a league best.
The Saint-Jerome, Quebec, native had spent his entire 10-year career with the Panthers after being drafted third overall in 2011. He has 198 goals and 415 assists in 671 games.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Cheyenne Parker drove the baseline and made a go-ahead layup with 0.3 seconds left to lift the Atlanta Dream past the Los Angeles Sparks 88-86 in Atlanta.
Los Angeles called a timeout after Parker’s make and Nneka Ogwumike sank a shot from the baseline but it was ruled after the buzzer. Officials reviewed the play and confirmed the ball was in Ogwumike’s hands when the buzzer sounded.
• Kahleah Copper scored 19 points, Allie Quigley added 18 points and the Chicago Sky beat the short-handed Washington Mystics 93-83 in Chicago.
Chicago (24-8) tied a franchise record for most regular-season wins, last done by the 2013 team. The Sky have a two-game lead over second-place Las Vegas with four games to play. Chicago plays at Las Vegas on Thursday.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Arsenal’s newcomers made an immediate impact as they opened the Premier League season by beating host Crystal Palace, 2-0.
Left back Oleksandr Zinchenko set up the opening goal in the first half, striker Gabriel Jesus created a number of chances, and defender William Saliba put in a near-flawless performance in his first start for Arsenal.
FIFA: The United States women extended their five-year reign atop the FIFA rankings, and new European champion England moved up to No. 4 in the latest rankings.
The U.S. leads No. 2 Germany, which rose three places despite losing the Euro 2022 final on Sunday. Sweden, the 2020 Olympics silver medalist, drops one place to No. 3 after being beaten by England in the semifinals at Euro 2022.
Fifth-place France and No. 6 Netherlands both dropped two spots. Olympic champion Canada is No. 7.
MLS: Forward Denis Bouanga signed with Los Angeles FC as the team’s third designated player.
Bouanga is leaving Saint-Étienne of France’s second division to join LAFC, the club announced without disclosing contract term.
• FC Cincinnati acquired center back Matt Miazga from Premier League club Chelsea.
Miazga, who has also played for the U.S. national team, signed a contract that will keep him in Cincinnati through 2025, with an option for 2026.
Miazga has been with Chelsea since 2016, but made just two appearances with the team. He spent most of his time with the Blues on loan and most recently made 11 appearances with the Spanish side Alaves last season.
COLLEGES
HOCKEY: The University of Michigan cut ties with Coach Mel Pearson following an investigation about allegations that he pressured student-athletes to lie about COVID-19 contact tracing during the 2020-21 season.
The investigation started after former Michigan and NHL goaltender Steve Shields filed a formal complaint in September 2021, when he was a volunteer coach for the Wolverines.
Shields also told the school and investigators that Pearson and then-director of hockey operations Rick Bancroft mistreated women who worked for the program.
