Smiles and waves were in abundance at Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk on Tuesday evening as Special Surfers held its third and final event of the summer. The organization introduces surfing to people with physical, developmental or emotional challenges.

Tuesday’s gathering broke attendance records with about 250 surfers and nearly 400 volunteers hitting the beach, said Nanci Boutet, founder and executive director of Special Surfers. “The volunteers want to come every year, they move heaven and earth to come again,” Boutet said.

Special Surfers, which began in 2003, holds the surfing events on the third Tuesday of June, July and August. “This brings about awareness to others not exposed to the special needs community,” Boutet said. “The special needs community has a lot to offer.”
