I would like to voice my agreement with Bill Lundgren’s Aug. 11 Maine Voices commentary on the parking situation in Portland and add a level of anger and annoyance.

The whole Portland peninsula is inhospitable to parking cars, and this is unbelievably increased by the prevalence of the parking lot company Unified Parking Partners. I don’t know who, in Portland government, has given approval for this company to take over so many parking lots in the city and to do business in such an unethical – and possibly unlawful – manner.

My example, to back up my commentary: We paid the fee at a Unified Parking Partners lot and had time until 9:11 p.m. We were issued a ticket at 9:12 p.m. since we had not yet moved our car.

The cost of the one minute beyond expiration was $43 (six times the hourly fee of $7) but only if paid in two days. After two days, the fee increases to $63, and after two weeks, the fee increases to $83. This is robbery and gives Portland such a bad image.

I am embarrassed for the city that we allow this company to operate here and that the company has taken over even more parking lots this summer.
