Vito Friscia hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Madison Stokes followed with a solo shot, leading the Reading Fightin Phils to a 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in an Eastern League game Saturday night in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Ceddanne Rafaela drove in two runs for the Sea Dogs with a home run and a double, and Izzy Wilson also homered, but Portland couldn’t complete a comeback from a 4-0 deficit.

Despite the loss, the Sea Dogs remained 11/2 games ahead of Somerset in the Northeast Division second-half standings.

AUTO RACING

CUP SERIES: Chase Elliott won the NASCAR Cup Series pole at Watkins Glen International, edging Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson for the top spot.

Elliott, a two-time winner at The Glen, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 10.477 seconds around the 2.45-mile natural terrain road course. Larson, who won last year’s race at The Glen, qualified in 1:10.516, just ahead of Michael McDowell.

“I’m really proud of our team,” Elliott said. “We’ll try to give them a good run tomorrow.”

William Byron was fourth and Tyler Reddick, winner of the past two road course races, will start fifth as Chevrolet took four of the top five spots.

AJ Allmendinger was sixth, followed by Chris Buescher, Austin Cindric, Daniel Suárez and Kyle Busch.

XFINITY: Kyle Larson zoomed past Ty Gibbs and William Byron when the two leaders made contact with under five laps to go, then held off AJ Allmendinger to win the Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Byron and Gibbs dominated the 82-lap race around the 2.45-mile road course but came together after the final restart. Larson was in the perfect spot to take advantage and zoomed past into the lead as he earned his first road course win in the series.

Allmendinger, 40, had won three of the four road course races in the series so far this season for Kaulig Racing.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Kahleah Copper scored 20 points and Courtney Vandersloot added 16 to help Chicago to a record rout of New York, 100-62, tying the first-round playoff series in Chicago and forcing a decisive Game 3.

The teams will play on Tuesday in New York, with a trip to the semifinals at stake.

Candace Parker added 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for the Sky, who broke their own WNBA record for largest margin of victory in the playoffs. Chicago won by 36 at home in Game 3 of the Finals last year.

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Petra Kvitova outlasted Madison Keys 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3 to reach the final in Mason, Ohio.

The 32-year-old Kvitova had never advanced to the semifinals in 10 prior appearances in the Cincinnati tournament. She’ll play for the title against Caroline Garcia, the first qualifier to reach the final in Cincinnati.

Garcia, 28, beat sixth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

SOCCER 

ENGLAND: Harry Kane scored for the second straight game to secure a 1-0 win for Tottenham over Wolverhampton in the Premier League and maintain his team’s unbeaten start to the season.

Kane lost his marker near the back post to head in following a flick-on from Ivan Perisic at a corner in the 64th minute.

It was his 185th Premier League goal, moving him into fourth place on the all-time list. Only Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andrew Cole are above him.

• Arsenal made it three straight wins to open the by beating Bournemouth 3-0, with Martin Odegaard scoring twice in the first 11 minutes.

• Without the dropped Wesley Fofana, Leicester threw away the lead to lose 2-1 at home to Southampton as its tough start to the season continued.

Che Adams came off the bench to score in the 68th and 84th minutes – the second coming from a spectacular scissor kick – to earn Southampton a first win at the third time of trying.

• Wilfried Zaha underlined his importance to Crystal Palace with two more goals as his team picked up a first Premier League win of the season by fighting back to beat Aston Villa 3-1.

• England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford provided the assist for Demarai Gray’s late equalizer as Everton snatched its first Premier League point of the season in a 1-1 draw against promoted Nottingham Forest.

• Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 90th-minute header snatched Fulham a 3-2 win over local rival Brentford in the Premier League at a rocking Craven Cottage.

GOLF

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR: American Nelly Korda shot a 5-under 67 to make up seven strokes on her sister, Jessica, and win the Aramco Team Series in Sotogrande, Spain.

Nelly Korda had bogeys on her second and final holes, but it was still enough for a three-shot victory over her older sister, Spaniard Ana Pelaez Trivino and France’s Pauline Roussin.

Nelly Korda finished with a 13-under total at the La Reserva Club de Sotogrande.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Play was suspended for the day at the Czech Masters after the course was flooded following heavy rain.

Only 10 players were able to start the third round at the Albatross Golf Resort near Prague.

COLLEGES 

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Former Florida forward Keyontae Johnson, who collapsed during a game in December 2020 and hasn’t played since, is headed to Kansas State to resume his college career.

Johnson made the announcement on social media, committing to the Wildcats over fellow finalists Memphis, Nebraska and Western Kentucky. The 23-year-old Norfolk, Virginia, native will have one year of eligibility remaining, although he could petition the NCAA for another.

Johnson graduated from Florida in late April and announced plans to transfer days later. K-State and new coach Jerome Tang hosted Johnson on a recruiting visit in July.

Johnson has indicated he has received medical clearance to play again, something Florida officials said wasn’t going to happen in Gainesville.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Dutch fans got a surprise treat as Mike Teunissen grabbed the overall leader’s red jersey, and Sam Bennett of Ireland won the sprint finish in the second stage.

Defending champion Primoz Roglic stayed near the top of the standings.

Teunissen came in fourth place at the final sprint to become the second Dutch leader in the overall standings after his Jumbo-Visma teammate Robert Gesink led after the first stage.
