The operator of an Old Orchard Beach amusement park ride likely didn’t check the restraints on a 10-year-old boy before the child fell off the ride in July, the state Fire Marshal’s Office found, according to WGME.

The boy, who was at Palace Playland with his family on July 16, suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening and was taken to a local hospital.

WGME reported Thursday that the boy told state investigators he didn’t feel secure on the ride and tried to get off just as it started.

The incident happened at around 6 p.m. on a Saturday while the boy was riding the Super Star, which is located at the entrance to Palace Playland and the intersection of Old Orchard Street and West Grand Avenue. Described as a family ride on the Palace Playland website, the Super Star has three arms radiating from a central column. Each arm holds seven gondolas. When the ride begins, the central column spins one way, while the stars at the end of each arm are raised in the air and rotate the other way.

Several witnesses said the boy’s head was bleeding but he appeared to be conscious as he was transported for medical care.
