Safety day set for Sept. 10

A Kids Safety Day will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept.10, in the parking lot of Hannaford supermarket at 2 Hannaford Drive. The event is free and open to the public.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., go through the fire department’s smokehouse and view fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles. CPR demonstrations will also be held.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visit a mock crime scene. At 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., K-9 demonstrations will be held. A vehicle extrication demonstration will be staged at 11 a.m.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will sponsor a bicycle rodeo supported by Ernie’s Cycle Shop of Westbrook. Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to win one of two bikes.

The Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation will give away free multi-sport helmets to the first 200 attendees along with a fitting and safety check. Bring an old helmet for a fitting.

Free hotdogs, popcorn, water and soda will be available all day at the event being co-hosted by Westbrook Public Safety and  Saco & Biddeford Savings.

Student intern

Anastasia Kapothanasis, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Saint Anselm College, recently completed a summer internship at U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ Portland Constituent Services Center.

Kapothanasis is captain of the Division II tennis team at the Manchester, N.H. college and plans to attend law school after graduation.

“It is always a pleasure to give Maine students an opportunity to serve the citizens of our state,” Collins said in a press release. “Anastasia has a strong work ethic, and I was delighted to have her in my Portland Constituent Services Center helping Mainers this summer.”

Pigeon program 

Westbrook Historical Society will hear about homing pigeons at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the community center, 426 Bridge St. Jon Bernhard will bring a few pigeons to see.

Concert schedule

Black Feathers will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the Conant Homestead at 99 Conant St.

50 years ago

The American Journal on Aug. 30, 1972, reported that Saccarappa Grange at the corner of Oak and Seavey streets was to meet Sept. 2. Eloise Elwell and Georgia Allen were asked to arrange for refreshments.
