SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan man died early Tuesday after the SUV he was driving on U.S. Route 2 hydroplaned and crashed, according to police.

Mario Centofanti, 53, was traveling west on Route 2, also known as Canaan Road, in a 2005 GMC Envoy just before 5 a.m. when it is believed the SUV passed through standing water on the road and hydroplaned, police Chief David Bucknam said in an email.

“The vehicle flipped end over end and it appears Mario was ejected through the sunroof,” Bucknam said. “Mario passed away at the scene from injuries sustained from the crash.”

Sgt. Tim Williams and Officer Monique Dudley responded to the wreck, which occurred at the entrance to the state Department of Transportation maintenance garage, according to Bucknam. That garage is east of the Great Eddy on the Kennebec River.

Bucknam said the crash investigation is ongoing.

“Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash,” he said.
