Just weeks before Election Day, a Brunswick resident has offered to run for the District 6 Town Council seat after no candidate appeared on the ballot for the first time in decades, according to Assistant Town Clerk Susan Karnes.

Nathaniel Shed informed the Town Clerk’s office of his decision to enter as a write-in candidate earlier this week, stepping into a race that previously had drawn no contenders.

Current District 6 Councilor Kate Foye is not seeking reelection.

While Shed’s name will not appear on the ballot, his name will be posted in each voting booth along with U.S. House District 1 write-in hopeful Alan McDonald, according to Karnes.

This will mark the first time since 1994 that a Brunswick Town Council race won’t have a candidate on the ballot, according to the Town Clerk’s office.

Whoever earns the most write-in votes, whether Shed or some other resident, will have the option of joining the Council or turning down the job, which would trigger a special election to fill the vacancy, Karnes said. Attempts to reach Shed for comment Wednesday weren’t successful.

Other District 6 residents who would like to promote write-in campaigns of their own should contact the Town Clerk’s office by Friday, Nov. 4.

Voters have until Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. to request an absentee ballot from the Town Clerk’s office. Ballots must be returned to the office in person or via mail or town drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

As of midday Wednesday, just under 4,000 Brunswick voters had requested absentee ballots, nearly 2,400 of which had been completed and returned, according to the Town Clerk’s office.
