Fifth-seeded South Portland took a two-goal halftime lead and held on for a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Cheverus in a Class A South boys’ soccer prelim Saturday in South Portland.

The Red Riots (11-4) advance to face No. 4 Gorham in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Curtis Metcalf gave South Portland an early lead, after a pass from Jayden Kim, but Collin Plalum’s header off a throw-in from Carter Hoglund tied the score.

The Red Riots then got back-to-back goals. Joey Hanlon broke the tie with an assist from Casey Corcoran, then set up Griffin Tetzlaff with just over a minute left in the first half.

Hoglund answered for the Stags (5-7-3) with about 15 minutes remaining.

Thomas Caouette stopped four saves for South Portland. Cheverus keeper Gustavo Cedillo made five saves.

PORTLAND 6, WESTBROOK 0: The seventh-seeded Bulldogs (10-5) scored four first-half goals and went on to beat the 10th-seeded Blue Blazes (5-7-3) in a Class A South prelim at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Portland will visit No. 2 Deering in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Ollie Hettenbach scored three goals, including two in the first half. Francisco Samuel opened the scoring, and Max Kierstead made it 4-0 at halftime.

After Brady Toher scored early in the second half, Hettenbach completed his hat trick.

Ben Littell made five saves for Portland. The Blue Blazes got 11 saves from Jason McCarthy.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 3, YORK 1: Jacob Adams, Rafael Ajimura and Florian Koeppel scored to lift the seventh-seeded Raiders (10-5) over the 10th-seeded Wildcats (4-9-2) in a Class B South prelim in Fryeburg.

Aidan Clement made four saves to help Fryeburg advance to the quarterfinals against No. 2 Lincoln Academy.

GARDINER 2, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Alex Taylor scored his second goal of the game in overtime as the fifth-seeded Tigers (9-5-1) rallied past the No. 12 Patriots (5-9-1) in a Class B South prelim in Gardiner.

Cam Lasselle and Dylan Staples each had an assist for Gardiner, and Connor Fairservice made six saves.

Aiden Hebert scored an unassisted goal and Drew Reynolds stopped three shots for the Patriots.

GREELY 2, MEDOMAK VALLEY 1: Tate Nadeau scored with an assist from Sean-Marley Rwabira with 2.5 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the eighth-seeded Rangers (8-6-1) over the ninth-seeded Panthers (6-8-1) in a Class B South prelim in Cumberland.

Greely’s Tommy Bennert scored in the first half, assisted by Owen Piesik. Medomak’s Dima Cheeseman tied it with his first career goal in the second half.

Greely will play top-seeded Cape Elizabeth on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

PORTLAND 1, SANFORD 0: Eliza Stein headed in a corner kick by Kendall Sniper, Lucy Tidd stopped a penalty kick in the second half, and the ninth-seeded Bulldogs (8-7) held on to beat the eighth-seeded Spartans (7-6-2) in a Class A South prelim in Sanford.

Sniper lofted a well-placed service in front of the goal and Stein popped it into the left corner under the crossbar 17:34 into the game.

Sanford was awarded a penalty kick with 15:23 remaining when Hailey Tarbox took a well-timed through ball from Ava Hudson into the box and was fouled. Hudson took the penalty, which Tidd stopped while on sliding on her knees.

Portland advances to face No. 1 Scarborough in the quarterfinals Tuesday night.

WELLS 3, MEDOMAK VALLEY 0: Cosette Allaire and Grace Badger each registered a goal and an assist as the ninth-seeded Warriors (8-7) beat the eighth-seeded Panthers (6-8-1) in a Class B South prelim in Waldoboro.

Kambrie Thompson also scored, with an assist from Alivia Boucher, and Savannah Tardiff made 13 saves. Wells advances to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Cape Elizabeth on Tuesday.

YORK 5, MORSE 0: Chloe Lahme and Madison Raymond each netted a pair of goals to power the fifth-seeded Wildcats (6-5-4) past the 12th-seeded Shipbuilders (2-11-2) in a Class B South prelim at York.

Tessa Spaulding added a goal off a Chloe Bourque corner kick, helping the Wildcats advance to face No. 4 Greely in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

VOLLEYBALL

YARMOUTH 3, CONY 0: Dorcas Bolese and Annie Vinnakota each had 12 kills to lead the top-seeded Clippers (13-1) past the No. 8 Rams (9-7) in a Class B quarterfinal at Yarmouth, 25-13, 25-15 and 25-10.

Madi Beaudoin contributed five aces to help Yarmouth advance to the semifinals against York.

Cony was led by Avery Theriault and Jasmyne Mills with four kills apiece. Theriault also had two aces, and Ashley Tobias finished with eight digs.

SANFORD 3, CHEVERUS/GREATER PORTLAND CHRISTIAN 1: Kora Eckelman led the fifth-seeded Spartans (12-4) with 22 kills and eight blocks as they beat the fourth-seeded Stags (7-9) in a Class A quarterfinal in Portland, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

Billi Bruno posted 30 digs, while Samone Gallagher tallied six kills and eight blocks. Ellery Genest added 33 assists and Claire Odette notched nine kills for Sanford, which faces top-ranked Biddeford in the semifinals on Wednesday.
