Thank you for the Sept. 30 article highlighting the differences between Gov. Mills and Paul LePage on immigration.

There is near-universal agreement that Maine needs new immigrants in order to offset our aging population and grow our economy. We also need new immigrants to grow the diversity, skills and vibrancy of our workforce and our state.

We are fortunate to have excellent immigrant-led nonprofits such as ProsperityME, the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center and others that are working on this issue. But the governor’s office sets the tone. Gov. Mills has made it clear that Maine welcomes asylum seekers, who are here legally in search of a better life for themselves and their children. LePage set an unwelcoming tone, including consistently and inaccurately referring to asylum seekers as “illegals.”

The choice is clear. If you want a growing, diverse and vibrant Maine, vote for Democrat Janet Mills.
