The University of Maine scored twice in the final two minutes of the third period to earn a 2-2 tie with Northeastern in a men’s Hockey East game on Friday in Orono.

The Black Bears (2-3-1, 0-0-1) won the shootout, 2-0.

Northeastern (3-2-2, 2-2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the third period. Riley Hughes scored 1:59 into the third and Jakov Novak scored less than two minutes later.

Killian Kiecker-Olson got Maine within one 12:55 into the third with assists from Jakub Sirota and Thomas Freel. Donavan Villeneuve-Houle than scored a short-handed goal with assists from Didrik Henbrant and David Breazeale to tie it with 2:34 left in regulation.

Victor Ostman made 26 saves for Maine, while Devon Levi had 24 saves for Northeastern.

UMAINE 4, STANFORD 2: The Black Bears won their third straight America East field hockey regular-season title with a 4-2 win over the Cardinal in Orono.

Maine improves to 13-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference. The Black Bears will play their regular-season finale on Sunday in Orono against UC Davis.

The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter when Sydney Meader scored from Poppy Lambert. Stanford (7-8, 3-4) tied it in the second when Lynn Vanderstichele scored, but Chloe Watson and Mallory Mackesy scored in the third period to give Maine a 3-1 lead.

The Cardinal closed within 3-2 on a goal in the fourth quarter by Haley Mossmer, but Lambert added an insurance goal for the Black Bears.

Mia Borley had eight saves for Maine, while Daisy Ford stopped six shots for Stanford.

UMAINE 1, UCONN 0: Luisa Welcke scored with 5:35 left in the third period to lift the Black Bears (6-4, 4-1 Hockey East) to a win over the Huskies (5-4-2, 1-4-2) in Storrs, Connecticut.

Lilli Welcke had an assist on the winning goal for the Black Bears.

Jorden Mattison had 39 saves.

Tia Chan had 40 saves for UConn.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: The Nor’easters (1-0) took a 2-0 lead in early in the second period and held on to beat the Huskies (1-0) in Biddeford.

Keely Kasputis scored from Anna O’Neill and Courtney Himes 2:53 into the second to give UNE the lead. McKenna Remillard made it 2-0 less than a minute later with an assist from Meghan Hamilton.

Madison Chagnon scored later in the second period for Southern Maine, with an assist from Sydnee Chaisson.

FOOTBALL

GEORGIA: Vince Dooley, the football coach who carried himself like a professor and guided Georgia for a quarter-century of success that included the 1980 national championship, died Friday. He was 90.

The school announced that Dooley died peacefully at his Athens home in the presence of his wife, Barbara, and their four children. No cause of death was given.

Dooley was hospitalized this month for what was described as a mild case of COVID-19, but he pronounced himself fully recovered and ready to attend his regular book-signing session at the campus bookstore before an Oct. 15 game against Vanderbilt.

Dooley had a career record of 201-77-10 while coaching the Bulldogs from 1964 to 1988, a stretch that included six Southeastern Conference titles, 20 bowl games and just one losing season.

He is the fourth-winningest coach in SEC history, trailing only Bear Bryant, Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

OREGON: Sedona Prince’s career at Oregon has ended with a torn elbow ligament that will require surgery.

Prince, a 6-foot-7 center, has opted to forgo her final year of eligibility and pursue a professional career following surgery next month, the Ducks announced.

Prince averaged 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game last season. She drew attention when she posted about the disparities between the women’s and men’s weight rooms at the 2021 NCAA Tournament on social media.
