ALFRED — A resident of York County Jail, Derek Michael Smith, 31, of Buxton, experienced a medical emergency Tuesday night and was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford, where he died, said York County Sheriff William King in a statement issued Wednesday morning, Nov 2.

“All state protocols and notifications have been followed,” said King, who went on to say an autopsy was scheduled to take place.

Smith was held at York County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail on a Class C felony terrorizing charge in connection with a threat he allegedly leveled at Loranger Memorial School in Old Orchard Beach on Oct. 25.
