A fire that appeared to be under control Saturday night reignited early Sunday, destroying a home in Turner.
The first call came in Saturday at 9:13 p.m. When firefighters arrived at 627 Howe’s Corner Road, they were met “with a heavy fire rolling out of the basement window and door,” said Turner Deputy Fire Chief Nick Merry. “The fire had a good start on us. We were advised that all of the occupants were out of the house,” he said.
“We attacked the fire with crews going into the basement until the roof caved in on the back side of the building,” Merry said. “We backed the guys out,” and attacked the fire from outside the building.
After the fire was knocked down, firefighters spread heavy foam throughout the charred building putting out hot spots. Thermal images were taken showing readings under 50 degrees all through the building with no residual smoke, Merry said.
Firefighters from six other towns, Greene, Buckfield, Leeds, Canton, Livermore and Sumner, provided aid. After two hours at the scene, crews left, Merry said.
But at 1:13 a.m. Sunday, “we got called back,” Merry said.
When firefighters returned, the second floor was fully engulfed, and the entire roof collapsed inside the building, Merry said.
The Turner Highway Department then showed up with an excavator and dismantled the remains of the home to ensure there were no hot spots, the deputy chief said.
Responding to the second fire call were Greene, Buckfield, Leeds and Livermore.
“Everybody did a good job,” Merry said. “I’m proud of the guys for their efforts.”
There were no injuries to the family who lived in the home or to firefighters, the deputy chief said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
