In an age when the nuclear arms race is at its most dangerous and on the way to becoming permanent, we have lost track of the proper meaning of Nov. 11. Once it was called Armistice Day, and expressed the hope for lasting peace. For the last three generations, it has been called Veterans Day, and has been used to glorify war and preparations for battle.

As Veterans for Peace has pointed out, this is no way to honor people who have put their lives on the line for love of country.

It’s time to bring Nov. 11 back to its original meaning.
