PORTLAND — Maine State Ballet kicks off the holiday season with six performances over two weekends of its classic production of “The Nutcracker” at Merrill Auditorium from Friday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Dec. 4.
Set in early 19th century Germany, the ballet features the classic story of Clara, her Nutcracker Prince, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Emma Davis and Agnes Norman return to dance the role of Clara. Arie Eiten and Trevor Seymour dance the role of Nutcracker Prince. Newcomer Rachel Paradis joins veteran Rhiannon Pelletier as the Sugar Plum Fairy with Michael Hamilton as the Cavalier. David Jon Timm plays the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer, with Glenn and Janet Davis appearing as Judge and Mrs. Stahlbalm.
Choreography is by former New York City Ballet member and Artistic Director Linda MacArthur Miele, with three pieces of original choreography by world-renowned choreographer George Balanchine. Associate Director Gail Csoboth designed the colorful costumes and scenery. Performers include over 30 professional company members and an additional 300 dancers of all ages.
Returning this year will be music by the Maine State Ballet Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Karla M. Kelley Brenner.
Performances of “The Nutcracker” will run two weekends – Friday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m..
Tickets are $26-85, with discounts available for groups, seniors and children, and are available at mainestateballet.org, by calling PortTIX at 207-842-0800, and at the Merrill Auditorium Box Office located on Myrtle Street in Portland.
