HIGH SCHOOLS
Ruth White of Orono High qualified for the Champs Sports Cross Country Nationals by finishing fourth Saturday in the Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York.
White, a two-time New England champion, finished the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 51.8 seconds. Ellie Shea of Belmont, Massachusetts won with a time of 17:10.7.
The national championship is on Dec. 10 in San Diego.
GIRLS’ HOCKEY: Alyssa Marcoux recorded a hat trick as Lewiston beat Portland/Deering 5-1 in a season-opener at Troubh Ice Arena.
Marcoux opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first period, made it 3-1 at 8:39 of the third, and got the final goal with an assist from Crew Langley in the final minute.
Ava Geoffrey and Avaya Desjardins also scored and Kim McLaughlin stopped 16 shots for Lewiston.
Kate Martell scored and Erin Winship made 25 saves for Portland/Deering.
• Marina Bassett scored a goal and assisted on four others as Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland opened its season with a 6-3 win over St. Dominic/Winthrop/Monmouth at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
Delaney Whitted tallied Cape’s first two goals. Hatson Mosunic, Libby Hooper and Clio Cook-Sharp also scored for the Capers.
Gabby Allen, Georgie Davidson and Moira Craig scored for St. Dom’s.
HOCKEY
ECHL: Derian Plouffe’s short-handed goal with 9:12 remaining broke a 6-6 tie, and the Newfoundland Growlers overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Maine Mariners, 9-6, at Cross Insurance Arena.
Patrick Shea scored twice for Maine, which also got goals from Grant Gabriele, Nate Kallen, Gabriel Chicoine and Curtis Hall.
BASKETBALL
NBA: O.G. Anunoby scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, Fred VanVleet also had 26, and the Toronto Raptors beat Dallas, 105-100, snapping a four-game losing streak against the Mavericks.
Chris Boucher scored a season-high 22 points and had 13 rebounds as the Raptors improved to 7-2 at home.
Luka Doncic scored 24 points and Dorian Finney-Smith had 16 as the Mavericks lost their third straight. Dallas is 1-6 on the road.
TENNIS
DAVIS CUP: Felix Auger-Aliassime led Canada to its second ever Davis Cup final, winning both his singles and doubles matches in a 2-1 win over Italy in Malaga, Spain.
The 22-year-old Auger-Aliassime, whose four career ATP titles have all come this year, will look to finish off his season by leading Canada to its first Davis Cup title on Sunday when it faces Australia.
Lorenzo Sonego ground out a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-4 victory over Denis Shapovalov to put Italy ahead in front, but Auger-Aliassime pulled the Canadians level by defeating Lorenzo Musetti, 6-3, 6-4.
The sixth-ranked Auger-Aliassime could barely rest before he teamed up with Vasek Pospisil to defeat Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Dan Bradbury regained a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Joburg Open when Sami Valimaki of Finland double-bogeyed the 18th hole in Johannesburg.
The Englishman’s 4-under 67 kept him in front for a third straight day as he seeks a wire-to-wire victory and his first European tour title. Bradbury, 23, mixed six birdies with two bogeys to finish the third round at 17-under 196 overall.
AUSTRALIAN PGA: British Open champion Cameron Smith had a topsy-turvy round of 2-under 69 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Australian PGA in Brisbane, Australia.
Smith had six birdies and four bogeys to finish the hot and gusty day with a 54-hole total of 11-under 202 at Royal Queensland.
Liu Yanwei (70) of China and Masahiro Kawamura (71) of Japan were tied for second.
SOCCER
U.S. HALL OF FAME: Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley were elected to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame and will be inducted May 6, along with Lauren Cheney Holiday.
Donovan, 40, was a midfielder and forward who scored 57 goals in 157 international appearances from 2000-14. He is tied with Clint Dempsey for the U.S. scoring record and is second in appearances behind Cobi Jones’ 164.
Beasley, 40, was the first American to play in four World Cups: 2002, ’06, ’10 and ’14. A defender and midfielder, he scored 17 goals in 126 international appearances from 2001-17.
Holiday, 35, won Olympic gold medals in 2o08 and 2012 and a Women’s World Cup title in 2015. A forward and midfielder, she made 133 appearance with the U.S. women and scored 24 goals.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: World champion Lara Gut-Behrami got her first World Cup giant slalom victory in more than six years, with Mikaela Shiffrin finishing 13th in Killington, Vermont.
Gut-Behrami was third in the opening run but just did enough in the second run to edge Marta Bassino of Italy by 0.07 seconds. Defending Olympic champion Sara Hector, who led after the opening run, finished third – 0.20 behind Gut-Behrami.
• Aleksander Aamodt Kilde won the first downhill of the season, edging out Daniel Hemetsberger of Austria by 0.06 seconds in Lake Louise, Alberta.
Defending overall World Cup champion Marco Odermatt was third, 0.10 behind Kilde.
BOBSLEDDING
WORLD CUP: Kim Kalicki and Anabel Galander of Germany won the opening women’s bobsled race of the season, holding off the Swiss duo of Melanie Hasler and Nadja Pasternack in Whistler, British Columbia.
Kaillie Humphries and Emily Renna of the U.S. were third.
