Volunteers from Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach were among those recently recognized for contributions to their communities.

Lee Koenigs has a “can do” leadership style — an asset to the Old Orchard Beach Community Friendly Connection and the community at large, members said. So, the group  nominated her for a Spirit of America award, which honors the work of volunteers.

Recognized earlier by the Town of Old Orchard Beach, her contributions to her community were noted recently by York County Commissioners, who hosted a reception to honor Spirit of America award winners from across the county.

“A long-time resident, Lee knows the OOB community and reaches out to involve and engage community members and groups in a variety of efforts to bring people together,” her nomination reads. “She is able to ‘reach across the aisle’ and does so frequently as a community advocate, leader, and team player.”

As well as being a community volunteer, Koenigs is librarian at Libby Memorial Library.

Biddeford residents Robert and Diane Cyr were named Spirit of America award winners by the city earlier this year. Diane was described as the force behind the Biddeford Cultural and Heritage Center; Bob is the organization’s secretary. Both are involved in a host of other organizations including the York County Genealogical Society of Franco Americans and the Biddeford Historical Society.

According to their nomination, both “are always willing to give of their time and talents, and do so under the radar, as they do not seek accolades, but simply want to assist others in the community.”

In nearby Dayton, the late Eldon Petersen was named a Spirit of America Award winner. He was active at Bar Mills Community Church, serving as treasurer, financial administrator, and deacon over the years.

In all, 15 individuals and two organizations from York up the coast to Old Orchard Beach and inland to Cornish and Limington were recognized for their contributions to their communities.
