Excellent story by Colin Woodard, as usual, on the power the Maine delegation will, or won’t, wield after the midterms (“As Maine’s influence in Congress wanes, Sen. Collins holds on to clout,” Nov. 27). He quotes Sen. Collins as saying the national party needs to “take a hard look” at why the party lost so overwhelmingly.

Collins needs to look in the mirror. She campaigned for Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of the party’s bad candidates whose loss to John Fetterman gave Democrats control of the Senate.

In Maine, Collins endorsed Paul LePage, one of the worst governors in Maine history, who lost big to Gov. Janet Mills. Collins said nothing negative about the state party, even though it also lost both legislative houses and both U.S. House seats. The party says it lost due to “events” beyond its control. Like bad candidates and bad ads?

When even Maine Sunday Telegram columnist Jim Fossel (a former Collins staffer) says it’s time for change at the top, maybe the party should step up and accept responsibility.
