Less than 1,000 customers remained without power Thursday, a day after a strong wind and rain storm knocked out electrical service to more than 31,000 Central Maine Power Co. customers.

By 3 p.m. Thursday, the number of customers without power had dropped to roughly 4,900, with most of those in Cumberland County, according to CMP’s electricity outage list.

CMP reported 863 customers without power as of 7:40 p.m. with most of those outages concentrated in Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Kennebec counties.

Versant Power, which services northern and Downeast Maine, reported 6,961 customers without power Thursday morning. That number had dropped to just over 2,200 by 4 p.m. Versant Power said it expected to have power restored to most of its customers by 10 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Gray reported heavy rainfall amounts throughout Maine with Albany Township in Oxford County getting 2.96 inches, New Harbor in Lincoln County getting 2.17 inches, Farmingdale in Kennebec County, 1.7 inches, and New Gloucester in Cumberland County reporting 1.6 inches. The Portland International Jetport received .92 inches of rain.

Wind gusts reached up to 45 mph in Greater Portland, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies in Portland with highs in the mid-40s.
