WINSLOW — Seven residents were displaced over the weekend when a fire broke out in the basement at a multifamily building at 2 Monument St., a fire official said Monday.

The fire was reported at about 6 a.m. Sunday, according to Winslow interim fire Chief Scott Bolduc.

The report included that smoke was coming from the basement at the two-story building, near Clinton Avenue and the Ticonic Bridge leading into Waterville.

Bolduc said that as firefighters were preparing to respond, police arrived at the scene and saw flames in the basement. Officers began evacuating the building.

Firefighters from Fairfield, Oakland, Vassalboro and Waterville assisted those from Winslow in extinguishing the flames.

The seven people who live at the building were able to evacuate safely.

Bolduc said fire crews were at the scene until about 7:30 a.m.

The fire was contained to the basement and damage to the rest of the building was minimal, according to Bolduc. The fire, however, required, officials to disconnect the building’s electricity and water.

“I know the water has been returned,” Bolduc said Monday, “but the power is going to be held for a while.”

The American Red Cross was assisting those displaced by the fire, he said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday.
