Bates pulled away in the second quarter in beating Colby 74-48 Tuesday night in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Lewiston.

Leading 14-12 after one quarter, the Bobcats (5-2) opened the secondquarter  with an 8-0 run and pulled away from the Mules (3-4.

Meghan Graff led Bates with 33 points, 18 in the second half, with Morgan Kennedy tossing in 10 points.

Caroline Smith led Colby with 16 points and Carter McGloon added 12.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 80, ENDICOTT 58: Keegan Dunbar had 11 of her 26 points in the first quarter to lead the Nor’easters (7-3, 3-0 Commonwealth Coast) to a 26-14 lead as they cruised past the Gulls (3-4, 1-2) at Biddeford.

Jordyn Franzen added 15 points for UNE, Kaylee Beyor scored 14 and Juliana Tracey and Faye Veilleux chipped in with 11 apiece.

Tara Laugeni led Endicott with 24 points and Sarah Dempsey had 16 points and pulled down 11 boards.

BOWDOIN 88, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 26: The Polar Bears (6-1) opened with a 14-0 run and easily handled the Beavers (1-7) at Brunswick.

Emily Collins came off the bench to lead a balanced attack with 10 points for Bowdoin.

Grace Dwyer had 10 points to lead UMaine-Farmington.

(25) VILLANOVA 83, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY 42: Maddy Siegrist had 24 points and seven rebounds, Lucy Olsen added 14 points and host Villanova (8-2) beat American University (0-8).

Siegrist scored 15 points in the opening 13 minutes as Villanova led 34-15. The Wildcats extended it to 46-23 by halftime before starting the second half on a 9-0 run for a 32-point lead.

UCONN: Sixth-ranked UConn’s top scorer, Azzi Fudd, is expected to be out 3 to 6 weeks because of a right knee injury she suffered during her team’s weekend loss to No. 5 Notre Dame, a university athletic spokesperson said.

The sophomore guard was injured in the first half of the game Sunday when a teammate collided into her. She returned midway through the second quarter to play four hobbled minutes, but sat the rest of the way.

The athletic spokesperson didn’t specify the type of knee injury Fudd sustained. She underwent evaluation Monday and an MRI confirmed the injury, the spokesperson said.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

ENDICOTT 80, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 61: The Gulls (5-2, 3-0 CCC) took control with a 13-5 run to close the first half as they downed the Nor’easters (2-8, 0-3) at Biddeford.

Jalen Echevarria had 18 points to lead four Endicott players in double figures.

Winston Bryan topped UNE with 12 points.

(1) HOUSTON 76, NORTH FLORIDA 42: Ja’Vier Francis scored 14 points, star Marcus Sasser had 12 points in the first eight minutes before leaving with a cut over his eye, and Houston (9-0) coasted past visiting North Florida (2-6).

(3) VIRGINIA 55, JAMES MADISON 50: Kihei Clark scored 17 points, Jayden Gardner had 14 points and eight rebounds, and host Virginia (8-0) beat feisty in-state rival James Madison (7-3).

The Cavaliers, who lost starting guard Reece Beekman to a right leg injury early in the first half, prevented the Dukes from winning a second straight December game in Charlottesville, Virginia. James Madison beat Virginia 52-49 last Dec. 7.

(9) ARKANSAS 65, UNC-GREENSBORO 58: Nick Smith Jr. scored 22 points to help host Arkansas (8-1) overcome a sluggish offensive showing and outlast North Carolina-Greensboro (4-6).

(12) BAYLOR 80, TARLETON STATE 57: Freshman Keyonte George scored 22 points, redshirt freshman Langston Love added 20 and host Baylor (7-2) beat Tarleton State (5-4).

The Bears had trouble early pulling away from the Texans, led by former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie, but finally took a double-digit lead not long after halftime.

(17) ILLINOIS 85, (2) TEXAS 78: Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 12 of his 16 points in overtime, including the tie-breaking 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining, and Illinois (7-2) rallied to beat Texas (6-1) in the Jimmy V Classic at New York.

Jayden Epps added 11 points, including the final five points of regulation – a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left and two tying free throws with 8 seconds remaining. Epps then blocked Marcus Carr’s jumper in the lane just before the buzzer to force overtime.

NEW MEXICO STATE: Athletic director Mario Moccia says power forward Mike Peake has been suspended indefinitely from the team in connection with last month’s fatal shooting of a student from a rival university.

Moccia also told reporters that neither he nor the school could comment on Peake’s enrollment status as a student. Peake has not been charged in the Nov. 19 predawn shooting on the University of New Mexico’s campus in Albuquerque hours before the host Lobos were to play the Aggies. That game was canceled along with the Dec. 3 rematch in Las Cruces.

State police investigators said 19-year-old Brandon Travis conspired with two other UNM students and a teenage girl to lure Peake onto campus.

The subsequent shootout left Travis dead at the scene and Peake hospitalized with a leg wound that has required several surgeries.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 9, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Stephanie Lane had three goals to pace six scorers for the Mules (6-0) as they rolled past the Nor’easters (5-6-1) at Waterville.

Jillian Mozzocca added a pair of goals for Colby.

Anna O’Neill scored for UNE.

Kayleigh Laurendeau and Delaine Corcoran split time for the Nor’easters, combining for 45 saves, and Grace Caligiuri and Paige Bolyard teamed up to make five saves for the Mules.

BOWDOIN 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Sara Ito-Bagshaw scored to break a scoreless tie midway through the first period and the Polar Bears (3-4) blanked the Huskies (5-7) at Gorham.

Allie Britt added goals in the second and third periods for Bowdoin.

Haley McKim stopped 46 shots for Southern Maine, and Sally Solotaroff-Webber turned aside 18 shots for the shutout.

FOOTBALL

AUBURN: Auburn’s top two pass rushers are leaving for the NFL.

Defensive end Colby Wooden announced in a video on social media that he is skipping his senior season to enter the draft. Edge rusher Derick Hall also posted a video to announced his plans to leave.

BROYLES AWARD: TCU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley is the winner of the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in the nation, the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation announced.

Riley coached Heisman Trophy finalist Max Duggan and coordinated the top offense in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs, who are 12-1 and in the College Football Playoff for the first time, lead the nation with 19 plays of 50 yards or longer, with 10 going for at least 60 yards.

UNLV: UNLV hired former Missouri football coach Barry Odom for the same position.

Odom coached the Tigers from 2016-19, going 25-25 with two bowl appearances.

Odom was Arkansas’ defensive coordinator and associate head coach the past three seasons.

Odom replaces Marcus Arroyo, who was fired after going 5-7 this season and 7-23 over three years.

TULSA: Kevin Wilson will seek to bring Tulsa some of the prolific passing and scoring he’s overseen during six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Wilson was hired as Tulsa’s coach and introduced at an afternoon news conference.

Wilson is a 37-year coaching veteran who spent six years as Indiana’s head coach, going 26-47 from 2011-16.

Wilson replaces Philip Montgomery, who was fired after going 43-53 in eight seasons with the American Athletic Conference program, including 5-7 in 2022.
