Two local puppies will compete in the Puppy Bowl on Sunday before the Super Bowl.

The two dogs, Betty and Higgins, are from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland and will play on Team Ruff, shelter spokeswoman Kyra Hunsicker said. The opposing puppy team is Team Fluff.

Betty and Higgins are among 122 puppies from 67 shelters across the country vying for the trophy and looking for forever homes. This is the sixth year the Portland shelter is participating. “We are honored to be a part of it,” Hunsicker said.

In the contest, the puppies go out on a turf field, arranged into different sets of dogs. “They play and roughhouse and have a good time,” Hunsicker said. The show features “a lot of cuteness.”

The Puppy Bowl brings awareness to the many dogs in shelters across the country.

The event was filmed in the fall when both dogs were about four months old. Since the filming, both Higgins and Betty have been adopted and are living in Maine, Hunsicker said. While Betty and Higgins are not available for adoption, “we have many adoptable dogs that do need homes. All of our adoptable dogs are on our web page,” Hunsicker said.  The web address is https://arlgp.org.

The shelter now has 25 adoptable dogs. More soon will be arriving from Louisiana.

The Puppy Bowl will be broadcast at 2 p.m. Sunday on Animal Planet.
