PORTLAND – Carole Ann Redmond passed away on Feb. 13, 2023, following a courageous two-year battle with the aftereffects of Covid 19.
Carole was born in Portland on Oct. 4, 1936, the eldest daughter of Lloyd H. Savage and Angela (Russo) Savage of Portland. Carole grew up in the little Italy section of Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1954. After high school, Carole attended Gray’s Business College in Portland and was employed by Casco Bank & Trust prior to marrying David E. Redmond in 1956 (divorced in 1983).
Some of Carole’s fondest memories were from the early years raising her six children near the ocean on Hannaford Cove Road in Cape Elizabeth. The family later moved to Biddeford where husband, David, was a teacher and football coach. Carole moved back to Portland in the late 1980ies to care for her aging mother, Angela. Following her mother’s death in 1998, Carole relocated to Florida to help firefighter daughter, Arleen, raise her granddaughter, Bailey. After Bailey fledged the nest, Carole became a thriving snowbird well into her 80ies, spending summers in her beloved Maine and winters in sunny Florida. Carole was a person who lived her faith and openly shared with anyone who crossed her path the tenets by which she lived: God first, family second, and everything else third. Carole was fondly known as Meme or “the Memster” to her large brood, which also included many large dogs over the years including her favorites; pit bull Seamus and rottweiler’s Hans and Ziara who she spoiled shamelessly. Carole was a lifelong sports fan. She loved football, baseball, basketball and tennis and could report scores and statistics with surprising precision. When asked why she followed certain athletes, her answer often involved reasons having nothing to do with the sport, e.g., he’s/she’s a good Christian or good example or because they’re “giving back” to the sport or the communities from which they came. She did not hesitate to point out when she thought someone was “doing the right thing” and to give credit where she thought credit was due.
Carole will always be remembered by all who loved her as a spitfire who was clear on her convictions and who navigated the challenges she faced in life with courage, tenacity, and unwavering faith in God. When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she responded as someone that believed and trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Carole was predeceased by her parents and younger sister Joan L. (Savage) Trefry of Portland. She is survived by brother Donald Savage and wife Sharon of South Portland; daughter Maureen Redmond and partner Marc of Biddeford, son Michael Redmond and wife Karen of Kennebunkport, daughter Kathleen Redmond Miller and husband Paul of Gorham, daughter Colleen Redmond and husband Mike of Sarasota, Fla., son Rich Redmond and wife Raysa of Old Orchard Beach and Deland, Fla., and daughter Arleen Redmond Skille and husband Trent of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren Danielle, Joseph, Kelsey and husband Jonathan, Bailey, and Megan; and four great grandchildren Destiny, Cadin, Aliviana, and Skylar.
A Christian Service will be held at Jones, Rich, & Barnes in Portland at 11 a.m. on March 24, 2023. Carole’s family will host a graveside burial at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine, at noon on March 24, 2023.
