Bridget Monaghan scored 19 points and Kaci Kranson added 13 as Scranton beat St. Joseph’s College 64-45 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Scranton improved to 28-0 with the win and advances to the second round to play Rhode Island, which beat Rowan, 67-59. The Monks finish the season with a record of 23-6.

Hannah Talon scored 18 points to lead St. Joe’s, while Nina Howe and Elisabeth Stapelfeld each added eight.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UMASS 5, MAINE 2: UMass erupted for three straight goals in the third period and pulled away for a win over Maine in a men’s Hockey East game in Orono.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the third, Taylor Makar scored twice and Owen Murray once to give UMass (11-16) a 4-1 lead. Lynden Breen scored his second goal of the game with 5:18 left to bring the Black Bears to within two, but they got no closer. Cal Kiefiuk added a goal for UMass with 2:10 left.

UMass opened the scoring just 55 seconds into the game with Scott Morrow scoring with assists going to Reed Lebster and Kiefiuk. The Black Bears tied the game with Breen scoring at 16:26 from Thomas Freel and Donovan Villeneuve-Houle

The teams meet again Saturday night in their regular-season finale.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

HAMILTON 4, COLBY 3: Nancy Loh scored three goals and Evie Sheridan made 31 saves as the No. 2-seeded Continentals (20-4-2) edged the No. 3 Mules (17-7-0) in a NESCAC semifinal at Amherst, Massachusetts.

McKinley Karpa scored two goals for Colby. Jo Tattersall also scored. Mandy Busky finished with 25 saves.

MISSOURI 7, MAINE 1: Jenna Laird and Maddie Snider each had two hits and combined for five RBI as the Tigers (13-4) handled the Black Bears (4-6) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Snider singled home a run during a three-run second, and hit a two-run homer in fifth when the Tigers tacked on three more. Laird hit two-run single in the second.

Maine had just three hits: a double by Krista Francia, and two singles by Izzy Nieblas, who drove in Grace McGouldrick in the first.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

U. OF NEW ENGLAND 15, BRIDGEWATER STATE 14: Meagan Donovan had four goals and an assist, Paige DeVries and Morgan White each had three goals, and the Nor’easters (2-1) held off the Bears (1-3) at Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Sydney Balotin and Abby McHallam chipped in with two goals apiece. Maria Turriza made seven saves.

TUFTS 17, COLBY 14: Margie Carden had four goals and the Jumbos used a 7-2 run in the second half for a season-opening win over the Mules in Medford, Massachusetts.

Madeline Delaney, Emma Joyce and Caroline Conaghan each had three goals for Tufts, who scored the final four goals of the third quarter and outscored the Mules 3-2 in the fourth.

Annie Eddy led Colby with five goals and Gianna Bruno added three. Paige Saudek and Elizabeth Hennessey had two each.

BASEBALL

WINTHROP 16, MAINE 9: Ramses Cordova hit a two home runs and Brody Hopkins added two hits and three RBI as the Eagles (6-4) cruised to a win over the Black Bears (2-5) at Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Quinn McDaniel and Jake Rainess hit a two-run home run each for Maine. Jeremiah Jenkins had a solo homer and Dylan McNary added an RBI triple.
