Albany scored the final seven points of the game and held on to beat the University of Maine 72-64 in the semifinals of the America East women’s basketball tournament on Sunday in Albany, New York.
The Great Danes improve to 22-10 and advances to face No. 1 Vermont in the conference title game at 5 p.m. Friday. Maine, which had a streak of seven straight trips to the conference final snapped, ends the season 16-14.
Anne Simon, who was playing for the fourth time since returning from an injury, scored 23 points for the Black Bears, including 14 in the first half. Adrianna Smith, who was in foul trouble in the first half, finished with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Kayla Cooper scored 23 points for Albany, which won two of three games against the Black Bears this season. Maine won the first meeting, 50-49, in Orono on Jan. 28 and Albany won both games on its home court, including 53-50 on Feb. 18.
Helene Haegerstrand and Ellen Hahne each added 13 points for Albany.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE CC 59, GREAT BAY CC 47: Thomas Martinotti had 14 points and the fourth-seeded Seawolves (19-9) beat the sixth-seeded Herons (20-8) in Auburn to win their second straight Yankee Small College Conference tournament title.
DeSean Cromwell added 12 points and eight rebounds for SMCC, who led by 14 halftime. Jack Pyzynski also had 12 points.
Theodore Wolfe had 14 points for Great Bay.
MEN’S HOCKEY
BOWDOIN 3, WILLIAMS 2: Bobby Pearl knocked home the winner 3:56 into overtime to lead the No. 7 Polar Bears (15-9-3) over the eighth-seeded Ephs (9-16-2) in the championship game of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament in Amherst, Massachusetts.
This is Bowdoin’s first NESCAC tournament title since 2014. The Polar Bears earn an automatic bid the NCAA Division III tournament. The bracket will be released at 10 a.m. on Monday.
Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead when Andy Stoneman scored in the first period. WIlliams responded with goals by Mac Carso and Owen Stadheim to take a 2-1 lead, but Stoneman scored again later in the first to tie it.
Alex Kozic stopped 35 shots for the Polar Bears, while Evan Ruschil turned aside 51 shots for the Ephs.
BASEBALL
MAINE 10, WINTHROP 7: Jeremiah Jenkins hit a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Black Bears (3-6) past the Eagles (7-5) in Rock City, South Carolina.
Jake Rainess went 2 for 4 with a grand slam homer for Maine, while Myles Sargent was 3 for 3 with a run scored.
AURORA 13, ST. JOSEPH’S 0: The Monks were held to two hits – a double by Terry Morrissey and a single by Jonathan Dube – in a season-opening loss at Auburndale, Florida.
MULES SWEEP OWLS: Patrick McConnell was 3 for 4, including a double and two-run homer to lead the Mules (2-0) to a 21-0 win the second game of a doubleheader sweep against the Owls (0-2) in Waterville.
Brady O’Brien had a three run home run in the second game for Colby, which won the first game 18-2.
SOFTBALL
ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS: Sylvia Foley hit a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning and Meredith Pence pitched a three-hitter as the Monks opened their season with a 3-0 win over Catholic (1-2) in Kissimmee, Florida.
In its second game of the day, St. Joseph’s was held to four hits in a 5-0 loss to Dominican (0-1).
TARLETON STATE 6, MAINE 1: The Texans (12-12) scored the tying run in the sixth inning and got five runs in the seventh to beat the Black Bears (4-10) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Maine scored in the first inning on a double by Kelby Drews, a single by Izzy Nieblas and an error.
MEN’S LACROSSE
MIDDLEBURY 21, BOWDOIN 15: Tom Conley and Williams Ryan scored four goals as the Panthers beat the Polar Bears in the season opener for both teams in Middlebury, Vermont.
Patrick Fitzgerald scored six goals while Will Byrne had four goals and an assist for Bowdoin.
PLYMOUTH STATE 10, ST. JOSEPH’S 9: Crosby Fay scored his fifth of the game to open the fourth quarter with a 4-0 run as the Panthers (3-0) held off the Monks (0-4) in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Noah Tierney-Honan had four goals for St. Joseph’s, while Tiger Hopkins added three goals and an assist.
TUFTS 27, COLBY 9: Jack Boyden had five goals and three assists as the Jumbos beat the Mules in a mutual opener at Waterville.
Jack Goller had three goals for Colby.
WESLEYAN 24, BATES 5: DJ Dixon and Justin Hazard scored four goals apiece as the Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) pulled away to beat the Bobcats (0-2, 0-1) in Lewiston.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
SALISBURY 14, COLBY 12: Paige Saudek scored five goals but the Mules (0-2) lost to the Seagulls (4-1) in Salisbury, Maryland.
Annie Eddy added three goals and Julia Jardina two for Colby.
BOWDOIN 17, ROGER WILLIAMS 9: The Polar Bears (1-0) outscored the Hawks (2-1) 10-1 in the second quarter on their way to a win in Brunswick.
Fiona Bundy and Sophia Sudano each had four goals for Bowdoin, while Colleen McAloon added three goals and a pair of assists.
WHEATON 10, SOUTHERN MAINE 9: Brooke Harvey had five goals, including the winner with 17 seconds left, as the Lyons (3-1) beat the Huskies (0-3) in Norton, Massachusetts.
Rachel Shanks led Southern Maine with three goals and an assist.
