Jean Skorapa is the superintendent of RSU 5, which includes the towns of Freeport, Durham and Pownal.

We have much to celebrate as a school community. The schools in RSU 5 have a culture of kindness and respect for individual differences. Our students continue to have high academic performance which supports the achievement of their postsecondary goals. Students in the visual arts receive many awards and accolades for their outstanding accomplishments. Musicians are regularly selected to attend state and district festivals. Athletic teams dominate on the fields and slopes, bringing home championships and good sportsmanship awards. These things are possible because of the ongoing generous support our schools receive from the residents of Durham, Freeport and Pownal.

As we look to the 2023-24 school year, we are in the process of developing a budget that will allow us to continue to provide a high quality education and move our district forward, while at the same time being fiscally responsible to the taxpayer. There will be several opportunities in the upcoming months for the public to provide feedback regarding the fiscal year 2024 budget. On March 15 and 22, the board of directors will solicit public input for the budget as they begin their deliberations. Question-and-answer sessions are scheduled in Pownal on April 12, Durham on April 26 and Freeport on May 10. The process will culminate in our annual budget meeting on May 24 prior to the June 13 budget validation referendum in each town. Visit the RSU 5 website at rsu5.org for more information regarding location and times.

RSU 5 is rich with a wonderful community of students and parents, an excellent teaching and support staff, outstanding educational leaders and strong community support. I believe our students have a bright future and that our district will fulfill its mission “to inspire and support every learner by challenging minds, building character, sparking creativity, and nurturing passions.” I am incredibly thankful for your continued support of RSU 5, our students, our programs and our staff.
