Anthony Sciucco scored 13:07 into overtime to send the University of New England to the NCAA Division III men’s hockey semifinals for the second year in a row after a 5-4 victory over Utica in Utica, New York.

Utica (25-3-1), which entered with an 18-game winning streak and a 26-game unbeaten streak, erased a 4-1 deficit in the third period, but UNE goalie Billy Girard frustrated the Pioneers with 58 saves, including 19 in overtime, as the Nor’easters eliminated Utica in the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

UNE (21-6-2) trailed 1-0 in the second period before consecutive goals by Sciucco, Garrett Devine and Kevin O’Keefe. Logan DiScanio made it 4-1 early in the third.

UNE will play defending NCAA champion Adrian in the semifinals Friday at a site to be announced.

BASEBALL

VANDERBILT 8, TENNESSEE 0: Hunter Owen of South Portland pitched a two-hitter Friday night to lead Vanderbilt to a win over third-ranked Mississippi, the defending College World Series champion, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Owen, a junior left-hander, needed just 96 pitches on the way to his first collegiate complete game. He struck out 11, walked one, and retired the final 23 batters.

Owen is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in five starts this season, serving as the No. 2 starter for the Commodores (15-5).

UMAINE SPLITS: Dylan McNary and Jake Rainess each homered twice and scored four runs as Maine (6-11, 2-1 America East) rolled to a 15-7 win over UMBC (7-8, 1-2) in a doubleheader opener at Baltimore, Maryland.

Jeremiah Jenkins also homered and had four RBI for the Black Bears. Rainess finished with four RBI, while McNary and Connor Goodman each drove in three runs.

The Retrievers salvaged a split by winning the second game, 13-1.

BATES SWEEPS: Henry Jamieson and Drew Fallon homered in Game 1 and Tyler Attal went deep in Game 2 as Bates (5-2) swept a doubleheader from Brandeis (2-5) in Waltham, Massachusetts, 13-8 and 9-3.

Chrstopher Cimino finished the day with five RBI, including three in the second game. Jamieson was 3 for 4 with three RBI in the opener.

COLBY 8, ST. LAWRENCE 7: Clint Flippo tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth and Charlie Furlong scored on a wild pitch as the Mules (3-2) got a walk-off win over the Saints (0-1) in Davenport, Florida.

Brady O’Brien hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Colby, which overcame a 7-3 deficit.

WISCONSIN-STEPHENS POINT 17, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: The Huskies (1-8) opened with two runs in the top of the first inning but struggled the rest of the way as they fell to the Pointers (5-2) in a seven-inning game at Davenport, Florida.

Cam Seymour belted a solo home run, and Anthony Poole had two hits for USM.

ST. JOSEPH’S LOSES TWICE: A grand slam by Jeffrey Brennan helped WPI complete a doubleheader sweep against St. Joseph’s with its second 6-2 victory of the day in Northboro, Massachusetts.

Michael Wearne had a double and an RBI single in Game 2 for St. Joseph’s.

Zach Miles got two of the Monks’ seven hits in Game 1.

PENN STATE MONT ALTO 6, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 5: Michael O’Brien had two hits and two RBI for Southern Maine Community College (0-3), but the SeaWolves gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Nittany Lions (10-6) in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania.

SOFTBALL

MAINE LOSES TWICE: Alexandra Gruitch allowed only three hits but gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Maine lost 1-0 to Dartmouth (5-10) in Moraga, California.

The Black Bears (7-18) also were shut out in their second game of the day, losing 2-0 to St. Mary’s (7-14).

BOWDOIN LOSES TWICE: Whitney Leipold’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Loras (8-4) a 9-8 win over Bowdoin (5-4) in Clermont, Florida.

The Polar Bears had taken an 8-7 lead with four runs in their half of the sixth on an RBI single by Shea Sullivan, a two-run double by Sydney Lang and a run-scoring double by Lilly Armstrong.

Armstrong finished with three hits and two RBI. Sullivan had two hits and three RBI.

In Bowdoin’s second game of the day, Angelina Mayers homered in the fourth inning, but the Polar Bears (5-5) lost to Hope (5-3), 9-1 in six innings.

COLBY SWEEPS: Jackie Hill’s three-run triple helped Colby (3-1) complete a doubleheader sweep with a 7-2 win over Minnesota-Morris (3-10) in Winter Haven, Florida.

In Game 1, Abby Orso struck out 14 and allowed five hits while pitching the Mules to a 1-0 victory.

MEN’S LACROSSE

SOUTHERN MAINE 20, HUSSON 14: Omar Contreras and Nick James each scored four goals to lead the Huskies (2-4) past the Eagles (4-3) in Gorham.

USM raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Danny Carter and Gunner McAllister paced Husson with three goals apiece.

ST. JOSEPH’S 11, DEAN 10: Tim Goodfellow scored 3:39 into overtime as the Monks (3-5, 2-0 GNAC) squeezed past the Bulldogs (3-2, 0-2) in Franklin, Massachusetts.

Goodfellow finished with two goals and three assists. Xavier Michaud and Matt Denman chipped in with two goals apiece.

WILLIAMS 12, BOWDOIN 11: Will Byrne and Jason Lach each tallied three goals and an assist for Bowdoin (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC), but a fourth-quarter comeback bid fell short against the Ephs (3-1, 3-0) in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

WESLEYAN 21, COLBY 12: Jack Goller scored three goals and set up one for Colby (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC) in a lose to the Cardinals (4-1, 2-0) at Middletown, Connecticut.

ST. JOSEPH’S 19, ANNA MARIA 4: The Monks (4-2, 2-0 GNAC) raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised past the AmCats (1-4, 0-2) in Paxton, Massachusetts.

Carson Battaglia and Shauna Clark notched four goals apiece, while Lydia Clark had three goals and four assists.

BRIDGEWATER STATE 14, SOUTHERN MAINE 11: Emily Cloutier and Cierra Hill each recorded three goals for USM (1-5), but Bridgewater State (3-5) scored the final three goals to earn a win in Gorham.

WILLIAMS 12, BOWDOIN 11: Else Dean-Numcie’s free-position goal just 43 seconds into overtime gave the Ephs (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC) a comeback win over the Polar Bears (2-3, 1-2) in Brunswick.

Sophia Sudano scored five goals for Bowdoin, which couldn’t hold on to a 9-3 halftime lead.

AMHERST 12, BATES 8: Trish Balser, Caroline Taggart and Sadie O’Neil each scored twice for Bates (4-4, 0-3 NESCAC) in a loss to the Mammoths (4-1, 2-1) in Amherst, Massachusetts.
