KENNEBUNK – Wondering about the route schedule for curbside trash and recycling pick-up? Want to be able to find out if there is a breakdown or delay on your route that might postpone service? And what items are recyclable?

Casella Waste Systems is rolling out a new mobile “trash app,” with Kennebunk as the first community in Maine to launch the application. Currently the app is in “soft launch” mode, and is scheduled to go live on Monday, April 3, said Kennebunk Public Services Director Bryan Laverriere.

The app, “Recycle Better with Casella” is available on the App Store, Google Play Store and on municipal website at www.kennebunkmaine.us/curbsideapp.

Once a homeowner types in their street address, the calendar section displays the trash and recycling pick-up day, maps, and more. The wizard section allows the homeowner to type in an item like “laundry detergent bottle” to see the solution for disposal. The “need help” section offers a drop-down list of typical questions, like how to modify a reminder, or report a problem like a missed pick-up.

Laverriere updated the Kennebunk Select Board about the new app at a recent meeting.

“The big piece for me is sign up and register and get updates if the trash truck breaks down, is delayed or postponed,” said Laverriere. He said the app can create zones and alert people living there if there is a delay or other issue that impacts that specific area.

Laverriere said at some point,  as the app progresses, the goal is to have a “where’s my trash truck” provision, like those used by parents to see where the school bus is on its route to or from school.

“Having the communication option is fantastic,” said board chair Shiloh Schulte.
