SACO—  For the 20th year, Saco Middle School hosted its Body and Mind (BAM) wellness day focused on students’ social-emotional learning. On March 17, over 500 middle schoolers were able to choose among 50 activities.

Twenty years ago an idea was brought forward to have a day that allowed students the opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge themselves outside of a classroom setting applying what they have learned to real-life situations. One of the founding team members, Nicole Wise, teacher of band and financial and digital literacy said, “It began as ‘Cabin Fever Reliever’ and was intended to give students an opportunity to participate in winter-themed activities during a time of year when kids are not typically as active.” She said, “as educators, we believe that learning is best done through experiences and BAM Day encourages healthy lifestyle choices.”

Over the past 15 years, it became BAM day and began to incorporate more focus on lifelong wellness activities that would stimulate both the body and the mind. The multitude of offerings includes vigorous physical activities such as trampoline jumping, snow tubing, dodgeball, or rock climbing. Other opportunities promoted mental stimulation such as crafts, crocheting, puzzles, canvas painting, Anime, cooking, and Bingo.

“There’s a lot of activities to choose from,” said Charlotte Ramsey, SMS sixth-grade student. “It’s awesome to have a day doing other activities besides being in a classroom. I chose Anime, cooking, and Wii Sports because drawing, food, and games are a great way to spend the day”

Students are able to choose their activities and try new things. The goal is to provide activities that appeal to all interests and abilities.

Earlier this month the Maine Department of Education celebrated National Social Emotional Learning Day. More information on that can be found at Resources for Celebrating SEL International Day on March 10th – Maine DOE Newsroom
