Dorothy Elizabeth Ingalls

CAPE ELIZABETH – Dorothy Elizabeth Ingalls passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 24, 2023 at The Gorham House in Gorham.

Dorothy was born on Dec. 28, 1920 in Gorham to Harry and Marguerite Burdwood Evans. She grew up in White Rock and graduated from Gorham High School.

She married her high school sweetheart, Earle L. Ingalls and raised two children, Roger and Earle Jr. Dorothy was a lifelong Maine resident except for a brief time in Utah where Earle was stationed during WWII as an officer in the Army Air Force.

Dorothy was very supportive throughout Earle’s career as President of the Porteous Department Store chain, which required frequent business travel to attend meetings held all over the country.

She was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church UCC in Portland. Dorothy and Earle were members of the Portland Country Club where she enjoyed golf and other social activities. Bridge was a lifelong passion for her that enabled her to regularly see neighbors from the Bartley Gardens neighborhood where she resided in Portland until 1970. She continued to play bridge through her 90s and was mentally sharp through her lifetime. Despite having to give up golf, she loved watching tournaments. She enjoyed cooking and believed in maintaining a healthy diet.

After having lived in Yarmouth for 20 years and enjoying being a Farm and Garden Club member, she and Earle moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1989. She became an active member of the Garden Club where she became its treasurer until retiring from that position about six years ago. She had a “green thumb” with plants and loved feeding and watching birds.

She was predeceased by her husband Earle; one sister. Helen Evans Kuzoian, and two brothers, Paul Evans and Moyle Evans.

She is survived by her sons Roger (Carol) of Portland and Earle Jr (Cindy) of Bethesda, Md.; also, grandson, David Ingalls (Loretta), Cabin John, Md.; great grandchildren, Lucy and Sam; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will greet friends at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday March 30. A burial ceremony will be held at Riverside Cemetery in June.

Gifts in memory of Dorothy may be made to the
