Regarding the March 16 op-ed “The Willow Project is a carbon bomb. Biden just lit the match”:

I’m grateful to the authors for addressing the president’s recent decision to allow a destructive oil drilling project to move forward despite the grave consequences it will have for our communities.

Since the White House has refused to act in the people’s best interest, it is more important than ever that local governments take swift and decisive action to protect our planet and mitigate the impacts of climate change. As the authors of the commentary mentioned, Maine will continue to be affected by greenhouse-gas emissions in the form of heat waves, dwindling marine life and more.

However, our local leaders have an opportunity to protect us, our environment and our nature-based economy in the form of the Pine Tree Amendment. This amendment to our state constitution would ensure that all Mainers – now and in the future – retain their right to a clean and healthy environment.

Those who agree that the people of our state deserve fresh air, clean water and a pristine natural environment should call our state legislators now and urge them to support the Pine Tree Amendment.
