ALFRED — A man charged by police in connection with a gunfire incident on South Street in Biddeford has been indicted on felony and misdemeanor counts by a York County Grand Jury.

Dawud Abdur-Raheem, 37, whose address is listed as Bridgton on court papers but who was arrested at a Saco motel in January, was indicted on a Class C felony charge of reckless conduct with a firearm and a Class E misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm near a building.

The grand jury handed up indictments, a formal charge that indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with prosecution, on April 3.

The indictment stems from a report of gunfire in the area of 61 and 63 South St. around 2:45 a.m. Jan.17. Biddeford Interim Police Chief JoAnne Fisk said there were no reports of injuries.

“Biddeford investigators gathered evidence, drafted warrants and additionally sought the assistance of the United States Marshals — Maine Violent Offender Task Force in locating and apprehending Mr. Abdur-Raheem,” said Fisk following the arrest.

Abdur-Raheem, whom police said also goes by the name David Adams, was taken into custody Jan. 19, two days after police in Biddeford responded to a report of shots being fired in the downtown area. He was arrested on a warrant without incident in the early morning hours by Biddeford and Saco police and the U.S. Marshal’s Service at Brookside Inn & Cottages, on Ocean Park Road, where police said he had been living.

The next step in the court process is an arraignment, where he will be expected to enter a plea to the charges.

Abdur-Raheem remains at York County Jail in Alfred, held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

People charged with crimes are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The maximum prison term for a Class C felony in Maine is five years. The maximum jail sentence on a Class E misdemeanor is six months.

In a separate incident, Biddeford Police are continuing to investigate a report of gunfire on Pike Street late last year. Police received a 911 call at about 12:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, reporting multiple gun shots fired in the area. There were no reports of injuries.
