Real Madrid and Manchester City drew 1-1 in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday in Madrid after long-range strikes by Vinícius Júnior and Kevin de Bruyne.
Vinícius put Madrid ahead with a shot into the top corner in the first half and De Bruyne equalized for the visitors with a powerful one-time shot in the second half.
The second leg will be played next week in Manchester. The first leg of the other semifinal between Italian rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan is on Wednesday.
• UEFA expects revenue from broadcasters and sponsors to rise about 33% for its revamped club competitions in 2024, and pledged to spread most of any surplus among lower-ranked leagues if total sales approach $5.5 billion.
The Champions League currently drives global revenue of $3.9 billion for UEFA club competitions for each of the three seasons from 2021 to 2024.
UEFA’s confidence is based on a first wave of broadcast deals including Britain, France and the United States for the 2024-27 seasons, when the men’s competitions will add more games because of an expanded format.
JURISPURDENCE: Former Barcelona player Dani Alves will remain in jail after a Spanish court denied his request to be freed on bail while a sexual assault accusation against the Brazilian is investigated.
The court had already denied a similar request by Alves’ defense team in February, saying he was a flight risk.
Alves was provisionally detained in January after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub on Dec. 30.
He has denied wrongdoing and said sex with the accuser was consensual.
MESSI’S FUTURE: With speculation over Lionel Messi’s potential next destination turning into a frenzy his father intervened to say no deal has been agreed over a move to Saudi Arabia or return to Barcelona.
Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs until the end of June, and his father Jorge Messi said nothing will be decided before PSG’s season finishes on June 3.
OBIT: Antonio Carbajal, the Mexican goalkeeper who became the first player to appear in five World Cups, died. He was 93.
The Mexican Soccer Federation confirmed his death.
Carbajal had been hospitalized in the north-central city of León for blood pressure problems, was discharged and died at home.
Known as “La Tota,” he played for Mexico in 11 World Cup matches from 1950-66. Three other Mexicans have since appeared in five World Cups: Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado and Guillermo Ochoa. Others to achieve the feat include Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Germany’s Lothar Matthäus and Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon.

NFL: Former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza was not present when an alleged gang rape of a minor occurred at an October 2021 party in San Diego nor was he visible in videos recovered after the incident, which led to a police investigation and a lawsuit by the woman who said she was attacked, according to witness testimony.
CYCLING
GIRO d’ITALIA: Aurélien Paret-Peintre won the fourth stage for his first Grand Tour stage victory, while Andreas Leknessund took the leader’s pink jersey from pre-race favorite Remco Evenepoel, in Lago Laceno, Italy.
Leknessund, who rides for Team DSM, became only the second Norwegian cyclist to hold the pink jersey and the first in 42 years.
TENNIS
ITALIAN OPEN: Barbora Strycova earned her first singles victory since returning from maternity leave, beating Maryna Zanevska 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the opening round in Rome.
The 37-year-old Strycova returned to the tour two weeks ago at the Madrid Open after more than two years away following the birth of her son, Vincent. After beating Zanevska, Strycova was handed her 1-year-old son, who she told to “wave to daddy” in front of a TV camera.
Strycova, who will next face ninth-seeded Maria Sakkari, is planning to retire after this year’s U.S. Open.
COLLEGES
MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Big East announced it has hired Southeastern Conference administrator Dan Leibovitz as senior associate commissioner for men’s basketball, replacing Stu Jackson.
Jackson, the former NBA and college head coach, was hired away from the Big East to become the commissioner of the West Coast Conference in March.
• Clemson has added four transfers including high-scoring, ex-Syracuse player Joseph Girard III to its roster for next season.
The school announced that Girard, former North Carolina State forward Jack Clark, ex-Air Force guard Jake Heidbreder and former UNC Greensboro forward Bas Leyte all signed with the Tigers for next season.
