Stacy Brenner (D-Scarborough) welcomed the family of Joann Grohman to the State House to celebrate her long life and legacy, after her passing in April. She hosted the Hon. Joann Grohman was an experienced dairy farmer and author of the book, “Keeping a Family Cow,” which details best practices of dairy farming. Through her blog and online forum, she helped thousands face the challenges of dairy farming.

“Joann provided me with years of support in times of need. As my first cow, Dulcie, got close to calving, I checked in on the listserv, read the archives and posted my own questions,” said Sen. Brenner on the Senate floor. “Joann always replied with encouragement, sound advice, and reminders that I wasn’t alone in that barn, my cow knew how to give birth and how to offer milk, my job was just to learn her cues.”

About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people’s lives-and make a difference before they graduate.

“The WPI project-based curriculum’s focus on global studies brings students out of the classroom and their comfort zones and into the global community to apply their knowledge and to solve problems,” said Kent Rissmiller, professor of integrative and global studies and associate dean of The Global School, in the email. “Students are immersed in all aspects of a different culture, from the way people live and work to the values they hold to the foods they eat – all valuable perspectives for surviving and thriving in today’s global marketplace.
