A Milford man who was shot by police last week has been charged with several crimes, including attempted murder.
Djvan Carter, 45, was arrested Tuesday at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was taken after he was shot by a Maine State Police corporal who encountered Carter while responding Friday to a report of a domestic assault.
Carter was taken from the hospital to Penobscot County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on charges of aggravated attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and terrorizing with a dangerous weapon.
Last Friday morning, police in Brewer issued a “be on the lookout,” or BOLO, for a vehicle whose occupants were allegedly involved in a domestic assault. Maine State Police troopers responded to an area of Alton, a small town north of Bangor.
Troopers found the vehicle in question and saw the operator, later identified as Carter, assaulting a female passenger. Carter attempted to flee by driving at one of the troopers, according to information provided by Maine State Police.
Corp. Blaine Silk fired his weapon and struck Carter. Troopers provided emergency care to both Carter and the passenger, who suffered serious injuries from the assault, police said. Both were taken to the hospital.
The incident remains under investigation. The victim has not been identified but was still receiving medical care Tuesday, according to police.
As with all police shootings, the Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate to determine whether Silk’s actions were appropriate. A police shooting in Maine has never been determined to be unjustified.
