In response to a recent letter regarding the Electoral College and National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (“Letter to the editor: Past time to popularize the popular vote,” Aug. 27): It’s all about how America is structured and organized.
I must differ with the writer. The country is actually very divided over this compact. Today, the 16 compact signatories are all trifecta blue states: those with one party controlling the governor’s office and both chambers of the state Legislature. Maine’s unique method of assigning electoral votes via congressional districts isn’t compatible with the process the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact puts in place, one that hands over electors to the winner of the national vote.
Both Hillary Clinton and Al Gore knew the rules of the game: The Electoral College is the only score that counts.
Most major democratic nations also use indirect election systems to choose their head of state. This is where America belongs.
