We want to thank columnist Victoria Hugo-Vidal (The Maine Millennial, Sept. 3) for bringing back pleasant memories of northern Maine.

We used to love to head up to Caribou to visit our son, Dylan, who was fortunate enough to land his first job as producer-editor (after graduating from Southern Maine Community College) at WAGM-TV in Presque Isle, where he learned a bit of everything (including acting). It was a wonderful four-year experience that then led him back to Portland, New York City and, finally, Dallas, Texas.

The people of The County are genuine and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed. We remember the mileslong yard sales, playing disc golf and exploring the Marden’s discount stores up there.

Caribou is really a small town. One time, we decided to go to the movies to see “Cars” but were five minutes late. We were disappointed because nothing seemed to be happening. Lo and behold, we were the first and only customers, and they were gracious enough to start the film as soon as we had settled in.

When my son and I went up there for his initial interview, we stayed at a local hotel. Before leaving the hotel, I checked under the bed for any misplaced items. I was delighted to find a potato under the bed – so apropos!

Victoria is right – those potato fields are “surprisingly beautiful,” and those model planets along the way (even Uranus!) are so intriguing. Everyone should visit The County, and if you go around midsummer, be sure to catch the Potato Blossom Festival!
