Maine School Administrative District 51 can address climate change by not building a new school, but instead converting to a year-round, multitrack calendar, thereby increasing facility capacity. A multitrack calendar divides the calendar into four 60-day terms, with students attending three of the four tracks. This system is used across the country.
Heat pumps would have to be added for cooling but will benefit learning when the buildings are uncomfortable between June and September. Importantly, multitrack, year-round operation is most effective for greenhouse gas reduction.
New construction is greenhouse gas-intensive. Overbuilding schools increases greenhouse gases because more space must be heated and lit when not in use, and larger common spaces must be built to accommodate a larger in-service student population.
Athletes can still participate on teams when not in attendance (and concentrate on sport). Those needing catch-up study can attend a fourth track and not be held back for a full year. Teachers can receive more pay working a full year and do not need summer employment.
