BASEBALL
Mickey Gasper drove in four runs and Luis Perales pitched five strong innings in his Double-A debut Sunday, leading the Portland Sea Dogs to a 10-4 win over the Altoona Curve in an Eastern League series finale in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Perales, a 21-year-old right-hander who is rated as one of Boston’s top pitching prospects, struck out five of the first six Altoona hitters and allowed just two hits and one earned run through his five innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
The Sea Dogs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with the help of a two-run single by Gasper, who added a sacrifice fly in the seventh and an RBI double in the ninth.
Tyler Miller, another recent promotion from Class A Greenville, hit his first Double-A home run in the fourth inning.
Portland takes a three-game winning streak into its next series that starts Tuesday at Hadlock Field against the Akron RubberDucks.
MAJOR LEAGUES: New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset.
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has been sidelined since spring training because of a right elbow injury. There’s no specific timetable yet for his return, but Cole has said it’s possible he could be back in June.
It’s expected Cole will make multiple minor league starts before rejoining the Yankees.
• Baltimore infielder Jorge Mateo left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay and entered concussion protocol after he was hit by a bat as teammate Cedric Mullins loosened up.
Both players were in the area around the on-deck circle when Mullins, who was batting one spot ahead of Mateo, appeared to catch Mateo in the back of the helmet while lowering his bat behind him.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: A foul by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was upgraded Sunday to a flagrant-1 violation after the league reviewed the play in Saturday’s game.
Carter gave a shoulder shot to Clark that knocked her to the floor while Clark was waiting to receive an inbound pass during the third quarter of Indiana’s 71-70 win.
The league also fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for failing to make herself available to media after Saturday’s game, and fined the team $5,000 for failing to ensure that all players comply with league media policies.
• Caitlin Clark had just one basket and three points in the worst game of her young pro career, and the New York Liberty routed the visiting Indiana Fever, 104-68.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 20 points and Jonquel Jones added 18 for the Liberty
• DeWanna Bonner had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Alyssa Thomas recorded 14 rebounds, 11 assists and eight points, and the Connecticut Sun remained undefeated at 8-0 with a 69-50 road win over the Atlanta Dream.
• Diana Taurasi hit 7 of 9 from 3-point range and finished with a season-high 31 points to help Phoenix beat the visiting Los Angeles Sparks, 87-68, as the Mercury snapped a four-game skid.
• Kayla McBride hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points, Napheesa Collier added 24 points and 14 rebounds, and the Minnesota Lynx won at home against the Dallas Wings, 87-76.
AUTO RACING
INDYCAR: Scott Dixon won a record fourth Detroit Grand Prix, outlasting the competition in a caution-filled race on to become the first IndyCar driver with two victories this season.
The six-time IndyCar Series champion got his 58th career win, trailing only A.J. Foyt’s total of 67 in the series. Dixon broke a tie in the Detroit Grand Prix record books with Will Power and Helio Castroneves.
The Chip Ganassi Racing driver finished nearly a second ahead of Marcus Ericsson, followed by Marcus Armstrong, Kyle Kirkwood and Alexander Rossi.
DRAG RACING
NEW ENGLAND NATIONALS: John Force, 75, raced to his record 157th NHRA victory, beating teammate Austin Prock in the Funny Car final in Epping, New Hampshire.
Force had a 4.081-second run at 319.29 mph in his Chevrolet Camaro SS, while Prock ran a 4.096 at 316.38.
The 16-time Funny Car season champion also won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday.
