BOSTON — The Philadelphia Phillies placed catcher J.T. Realmuto on the 10-day injured list Tuesday and said he will need surgery to remove cartilage in his right knee.

The team said Realmuto will undergo a right knee meniscectomy Wednesday. No timetable was given for his return.

Realmuto hit .261 while helping Philadelphia open a nine-game lead in the NL East. His seven homers tied for most among NL catchers, and his 17-game hitting streak last month was the longest for a Phillies catcher in baseball’s modern era.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Phillies recalled catcher Rafael Marchán from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Marchán, 25, was the extra player activated for the London Series against the New York Mets last weekend but did not appear in either game.

Marchán, 25, also has a lengthy injury history. He was activated May 27 off the 10-day injured list. Since then he’s hit .219/.350/.344 for Lehigh Valley with a .694 OPS and one home run. He’s hit .264/.337/.343 in his eight-year minor league career.

ROYALS: Kansas City placed outfielder Hunter Renfroe on the injured list with a fractured toe and infielder Adam Frazier on the bereavement list ahead of the second game of their four-game set against the New York Yankees.

The Royals recalled outfielder Drew Waters and infielder Nick Pratto from Triple-A Omaha to take their place.

Renfroe was riding a nine-game hitting streak into Monday night’s game when he squared off with Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. Renfroe fouled consecutive pitches off his left foot during the 12-pitch at-bat, but nothing appeared amiss until the Royals removed him from the game a couple of innings later in an eventual 4-2 loss. Renfroe is hitting .200 with six homers and 26 RBI.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona reinstated shortstop Geraldo Perdomo from the injured list after he missed roughly two months with a right knee injury.

The Diamondbacks also sent first baseman/outfielder Pavin Smith to Triple-A Reno.

Perdomo, 24, played seven games this season before having surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He’s a solid offensive player, but his real value comes on defense, where he’s outstanding as an anchor up the middle.

METS: New York reinstated catcher Francisco Alvarez from the 10-day injured list, just in time for a three-game homestand against Miami.

Alvarez has been sidelined since having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb April 23. He injured the finger four days earlier after slipping while rounding first base against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets designated catcher Tomás Nido for assignment to create roster space for Alvarez.

GUARDIANS: starting pitcher Ben Lively, who underwent tests after leaving Saturday’s game with some tightness, is “good to go” for his next start, manager Stephen Vogt said.

Lively, a 32-year-old right-hander, was examined in Cleveland after pitching Saturday night in Miami. He left after five innings and 65 pitches but still won his fifth straight start as the Guardians beat the Marlins, 8-0.

“He just had a little tightness,” Vogt said. “He should be in line to make his next start. You know how we do it — always be as cautious as possible. He had an off day. Everything checked out. He’s good to go.”

CUBS: Rght-hander Ben Brown was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left neck strain.

Brown, 24, who was acquired in an August 2022 trade with Philadelphia, made his major league debut March 30 at Texas. He is 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 15 games, including eight starts.

MARINERS: Right-hander Bryan Woo was scratched from a start against the Chicago White Sox, and the team is awaiting results from an MRI on his right arm.

Woo, 24, spent the first month of the season on the injured list with elbow inflammation. He returned May 10 and went 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA in his first six starts.

TUESDAY’S GAMES

ORIOLES 4, BRAVES 0: Jorge Mateo hit a three-run homer in his first plate appearance after returning to the lineup, and Albert Suarez allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings to lead Baltimore, at home, to its fifth straight win.

Mateo was reinstated from the concussion injured list and played for the first time since he was hit in the head by teammate Cedric Mullins’ bat in a freak accident at the on-deck circle in a June 2 game. He hit a drive into the Baltimore bullpen in the second inning off Max Fried (6-3).

RAYS 5, CUBS 2: Brandon Lowe capped a four-run ninth inning with a three-run homer, lifting Tampa Bay at St. Petersburg, Florida.

Richie Palacios started the rally with a leadoff double against Héctor Neris (6-1). Ben Rortvedt reached on a one-out walk before José Caballero’s RBI single made it 2-2. Yandy Díaz then struck out swinging before Lowe drove a full-count pitch deep to right-center for his third homer of the season.
