Saco residents overwhelmingly approved a bond to pay for two new elementary schools.
The city’s voters passed the proposal Tuesday by a vote of 2,340 to 810.
Question 2 asked voters to approve $104 million in funding for a new pre-K and kindergarten school and a second school for students in grades one through five. The state will pay $101 million – or 72% – of the total cost.
School officials say the old buildings have unsolvable challenges and have needed to be replaced for years.
The new buildings would be built on a plot of land between Mill Brook Road and Route 1 that borders the Eastern Trail. They will include up-to-date technology in all classrooms, unified arts spaces what allow flexibility for STEM, robotics and vocational uses, and multiple outdoor spaces for learning and play, according to school officials.
The schools would have capacity for 12 classrooms per grade in pre-K and kindergarten, and 11 classes per grade for older students. There would also be space to expand by up to 10 classrooms in the future.
An analysis by city officials shows that the project would add $284 a year to the tax bill of a home valued at $412,000.
