Not every summer day in Maine is picture perfect. Whether it’s raining, the black flies are out in force or you just need a break from the beach, here are a bunch of ways to have fun inside.

Portland Museum of Art

In addition to “Jeremy Frey: Woven,” the first major retrospective of a Wabanaki artist in a fine art museum in the U.S., every third Thursday is free and features an evening party with musicians, food trucks and artists. Aug. 10 is Family Day.

Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine

Visit the three floors of regular exhibits at Thompson’s Point or book tickets to the show “We Are In A Play!,” based on the Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems, running from June 29 to July 28.

Victorian Mansion

The mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House, was built between 1858 and 1860 as a summer home for the Morses, who were from Maine originally but lived in New Orleans. The house contains over 90% of its original interior and is a National Historic Landmark. It gets busy on rainy days, so reservations are recommended. On Juneteenth (June 19), the house is hosting a community day with free admission.

Learn about Maine’s shipbuilding and seafaring history along the Kennebec River on the 20-acre campus with a historic wooden shipyard, a working boat shop and a Victorian shipbuilder’s home.
