Down in Louisiana, the evangelical and Christian nationalist movement has, once again, shown its hold on the current Republican Party philosophy and legislative policy agenda (“Louisiana’s new law requiring Ten Commandments in classrooms churns old political conflicts”).
Bad news for Christians and non-Christians alike. There are similarities, in my opinion, between this movements and what we are witnessing in Afghanistan and Iran with the Taliban and Republican guard “morality police.”
Establishing the Ten Commandments (if they only lived by them themselves) in every classroom in every public school is just another step. They are already in the bedrooms, courthouses, sports arenas and workplaces of many states.
What is really scary about this is that their “lord and savior” is not Jesus Christ, but Donald J. Trump. Now that’s a real stretch.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
