WINTHROP —A fire destroyed a Winthrop couple’s home Friday morning, and investigators were probing the cause.

No injuries were reported in the blaze at 30 Yorktown Road, which happened around 10 a.m. Friday. The couple living in the home and their pets were able to make it outside safely, according to Kale Malmsten, Winthrop’s deputy fire chief.

Malmsten said firefighters arrived to find the home, down a dirt road off Old Turkey Lane, fully involved in flames. Firefighters had the fire extinguished in about 20 minutes and then remained on the scene to douse remaining hot spots.

The home was on a road so narrow that fire trucks couldn’t turn around. The fire was knocked down with water from the initial trucks on the scene, with additional water fed by hose into the site to finish extinguishing any remaining hot spots, the deputy chief said.

The property does not have electrical service from the grid, instead relying on a generator for power.

The home was destroyed by the fire, the deputy chief said. Several investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal responded to look into the cause of the fire. Malmsten said there have been multiple fires in that area over the past year.

A spokesperson for the Office of the State Fire Marshal could not be reached Friday afternoon to say whether a cause had been determined yet.

Malmsten said the couple, whose names he did not know, was referred to assistance to help them find a place to stay. It wasn’t clear Friday from town assessing records who owns the property at that address.
