U.S. Rep. Jared Golden writes, “Hundreds of millions of freedom-loving Americans won’t let anyone take away our constitutional rights as citizens of the greatest democracy in history.”
Rep. Golden should recall that millions of freedom-loving Americans have already had their constitutional rights taken away from them. They are the women across America who have had their constitutional right to self-determination, regarding human reproduction, taken away from them.
I agree that “no one man (or woman) is strong enough to take (our rights) away from us,” but the Supreme Court of the United States is and has. And their decision regarding presidential immunity for “official acts” gives one man that power, unless, of course, the Supreme Court itself stops him.
Where has the voice of the people gone? The balance of power?
Let this be the rallying cry in November: This presidential election is not about one man — it is about defeating autocracy and the not-so-subtle Supreme Court decisions which are supporting it. Autocracy and the strong arm of corrupted systems? Or democracy and the return of the balance of power? Our choice in November.
