Two men were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a car and a motorcycle Saturday morning in Baldwin.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Yousif K. Abbas, 18, of Brownfield, was driving a car westbound “at a high rate of speed.” Abbas attempted to pass another westbound vehicle while cresting a hill, the sheriff’s office said, and collided head-on with a motorcycle being driven eastbound by Isaiah Reynolds, 29, of Hiram.
Reynolds was thrown from the motorcycle, and he wasn’t wearing a helmet, Capt. Brian Ackerman of the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Abbas’ car left the road and rolled over several times. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Ackerman said.
Both men were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries, Ackerman said.
The conditions of the two men were unavailable Saturday evening.
Ackerman said in the statement that the crash was caused by speed, unsafe passing and dangerous driving. He added that the sheriff’s office will discuss potential criminal charges with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.
Route 113 was closed for three hours Saturday while the crash was investigated and the road was cleared.
