BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have shut down Chris Martin after he experienced some discomfort Friday.

“He played catch yesterday. He didn’t feel great,” Manager Alex Cora said Saturday at Fenway Park.

Martin, who was placed on the 15-day injured list July 5 because of right elbow inflammation, will return home for the All-Star break. He initially was scheduled to travel with the Red Sox for the first road trip of the second half (three games at the Dodgers, three games at the Rockies). But he’ll instead fly back to Boston and stay there after the break.

“No imaging,” Cora said. “But he just didn’t bounce back the way he wanted.”

Asked if there’s long-term concern, Cora said, “Not concern, but it’s going to take longer than we expected.”

Martin missed 14 games on the 15-day IL from June 2-18 because of anxiety. He also dealt with an injured left shoulder (non-pitching arm) that affected his delivery earlier in the season.

The 38-year-old has a 3.42 ERA, 29 strikeouts and two walks in 26 outings (26 ⅓ innings) this season. His injury is listed as “elbow inflammation.”

ALL-STAR GAME: Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez is set for his first All-Star Game appearance as the replacement for Atlanta lefty Chris Sale, who is scheduled to start for the Braves on Sunday and won’t pitch in the Midsummer Classic.

The addition of Sánchez pushes the Phillies’ MLB-leading total to eight All-Stars, adding to the franchise record.

The game is Tuesday night at the home of the Texas Rangers. Philadelphia will go into the break as the only team in the big leagues with at least 60 victories.

METS: Drew Smith underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace procedure Friday, likely knocking the New York reliever out of action until 2026.

Smith, who is slated to hit free agency after this season, last pitched June 23, when he exited after getting two outs in the ninth inning of a 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. He had trouble getting loose after being pressed into action and warming up on the field after closer Edwin Diaz was ejected for having an illegal substance on his hand.

An MRI revealed what Smith called “some pretty significant damage.” Smith, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019, hoped he could have the UCL repaired via an internal brace, which likely would have allowed him to return next season. But the full Tommy John surgery carries with it a 12-to-18 month recovery.

ORIOLES: Baltimore put outfielder Heston Kjerstad on the seven-day concussion injured list, less than 24 hours after he was hit in the helmet by a pitch.

Kjerstad was hit around the ear flap by a 97 mph pitch from Clay Holmes of the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth Friday night.

SATURDAY GAMES

TIGERS 11, DODGERS 9: Gio Urshela hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after Detroit overcame a 9-4 deficit in the ninth to beat visiting Los Angeles.

Wenceel Perez bunted Ryan Vilade to third to start the 10th. The Dodgers played a five-man infield, but Urshela ruined the strategy by homering to left off Yohan Ramirez (0-4).

Shohei Ohtani hit his 200th homer and tripled, giving him 233 total bases — the eighth-highest total before the All-Star break since the game was first played in 1933.

YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 1: Juan Soto and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning and the New York won at Baltimore to become the first AL East team since April 2023 to win a series against the Orioles.

Baltimore had been 16-0-6 in its last 22 series within the division, but New York (58-39) has taken the first two games of this one at Camden Yards. The Orioles (57-38) still hold the division lead by percentage points, but the winner of Sunday’s series finale will have first place heading into the All-Star break.

CARDINALS 11, CUBS 3: Alec Burleson hit a three-run homer to cap a nine-run first inning, Lance Lynn pitched six solid innings and St. Louis routed visiting Chicago in the opener of a split doubleheader.

PIRATES 6, WHITE SOX 2: Bryan Reynolds drove in four runs, Luis Ortiz pitched neatly into the sixth inning and Pittsburgh won at Chicago.

GUARDIANS 4, RAYS 2: Jhonkensy Noel hit a two-run pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning, and AL Central-leading Cleveland beat host Tampa Bay to stop a three-game skid.
