GABE BERMAN, Senior – Tennis
• WMC first-team, singles
Berman certainly made his mark on the Capers program and produced a terrific senior season.
Berman played varsity tennis all four years, was a second-team league all-star as a sophomore, a first-team all-star as a junior and this spring, as the number one singles player, he was solid throughout, holding his own against the very best players in the conference.
In the state singles tournament, Berman was seeded 11th and got to the Round of 16 before bowing out.
Cape Elizabeth was knocked off by Greely in the Class B South quarterfinals.
Berman, who also played basketball in high school, finished with a career record of 32-9.
The record only told part of his story, as Berman was competitive yet sportsmanlike and served as a great team leader as well. His impact on the program will long be felt.
Coach Andy Strout’s comment: “Gabe is one of those kids that has it all. Leadership, drive, athleticism and he’s just a great kid. This is before he even steps onto the court. He is one of those players you want to watch. His quickness, competitiveness and drive makes for a must-see day-in, day-out. This is one of this kids that brought a tear to my eye when I had to say goodbye.”

KAITY WOODS, Senior – Lacrosse
• WMC All-Conference, first-team
* Senior all-star
* Captain
Woods truly did a little of everything this season for the Capers and her contributions both on and off the playing field helped produce a strong campaign.
Woods has been a part of the program for four years and by her junior campaign, was recognized as one of the league’s top players.
This spring, Woods scored 29 goals, added 13 assists, 21 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and won 33 draws from her midfield position.
Additionally, her work as a team captain paid huge dividends for a squad that got better and more united by the day and proved to be a formidable foe every time out. Cape Elizabeth was ousted by Cheverus in the state preliminary round.
The Capers needed someone to step up and lead them to big things this season. Kaity Woods was the ideal person to fill that role.
Coach Alex Spark’s comment: “Kaity has been an incredible role model and leader for the program. Not only was her talent at the top of her game, but her character was as well. Being a two-year captain also allowed our bond as coach and player to become very strong. It’s not often you have no senior class and your juniors lead the program, so it was a great opportunity for those juniors (in 2023) and they took full advantage of it, which is a big reason why our team chemistry and level of support for one another this season was so strong. Kaity treated all members of our program with kindness and inclusion, making our program bond stronger. She took time to connect with all the players on the team and make sure everyone felt involved, valued and excited to be there. She was an unselfish player that worked hard for the other girls on the field. She loved setting up her teammates and creating opportunities for them to succeed. In both good and hard times during our season, Kaity was the voice of our huddle, either focusing in on what we’re doing well, or pumping the team up to keep their composure and heads in the game when things were tough. The team trusted her and fed off of her energy the entire season. She is the type of player coaches love to coach. She left her mark on the program and because of her leadership, our younger players know what it means to be part of this program and how to represent it well.”
