You know how hot it was this week in southern Maine. We spent much of it in the Portland neighborhood of this wonderful home, and Julia and I were struck by how much cooler this area of the city is. It’s all thanks to the magnificent trees that have withstood the many changes around them, along with the beautiful gardens and peaceful lawns that enhance nearly everyone’s lot.
This home is no exception to the landscape. It’s been here awhile too: a classic, Colonial-style from the 1930s with new roof shingles. Enter the front door to a charming, tiled foyer. Hardwood floors cover the rest of the first and second floors. The kitchen has been recently updated with butcher block countertops and stainless-steel French door fridge alongside plenty of original cabinets. In the formal dining room is a built in China cabinet and glass-paned French doors to the living room with wood-burning fireplace. Upstairs are the bedrooms and an updated bathroom that has a tiled floor and shower.
In the well-insulated basement, you will find laundry machines and a wall-hung, natural gas heating system by Viessmann—extremely efficient. There’s also a finished space, currently used as an office. It has a separate entrance, where you step out to the driveway.
The backyard is lovely. Exit the sliding doors from the dining room to a deck with room for a grill, then step down to a more extensive platform where you could fit a table and chairs. Perennial flowers, blueberry bushes and vegetable beds surround the lawn. A storage shed is in a back corner. Beyond this urban oasis are sidewalks heading to the restaurants, grocers and shops of Woodfords Corner or Deering Center. You can be on the Back Cove trail or the University of Southern Maine campus in about five minutes by bicycle. We love where we live, but this would be a pretty nice place to call home too.
