The two opinion pieces on AI in education that appeared in the Press Herald on Sept. 6 (“AI could prove very helpful to Maine students” and “Fair evaluation of Maine DOE reveals no sacrifices“) missed the point. The question should not be what role, or if AI can have a role in education, but “what is the best way to achieve this (or that) educational goal.”

Maybe the answer will be a specific AI-based program. Maybe the answer will be very old-fashioned. The important thing is to improve learning, not to use the latest technology. All investments should be made with a specific educational goal and evaluated on the ability to achieve that goal.
